Category Controls

At the Application Reporting page of KVH Manager, you can enable a control setting for each category of application types (see Application Reporting) according to your vessel’s needs and preferences. There are up to three options available for each category:

Setting	Description
Allow	Uncontrolled; data passes at the highest available speeds for that channel
Restrict	Limited to a minimal trickle of data at the slowest speed
Block	Best effort to prevent all data from passing

To change a setting, select the Edit button (pencil icon) and agree to the Conditions of Use. Then select the desired setting for each category. When you are done, select Save Changes.

At a minimum, KVH recommends that customers restrict the two Background Data Management categories – Bulk Transfer and Network Storage. Because operating systems, browsers, and other applications assume an always-on broadband connection, they may routinely connect to the Internet on their own to download software updates and synchronize files without any regard to the amount of data they are passing. The Restrict setting will minimize this inadvertent data usage while still allowing common network applications and computer functions to work.

IMPORTANT! The Category Controls tool is designed to assist you in managing your VSAT data usage. You are solely responsible to supervise and control your use of data using this tool and through other means. Category Controls do not affect cellular or Wi-Fi data usage.

Application Reporting is made available for illustrative purposes only, and KVH does not guarantee its accuracy. This tool uses externally generated IP signatures to enable you to ALLOW, RESTRICT, or BLOCK application categories. Some applications may not be restricted or blocked entirely by this tool. Further, the status of restricted or blocked applications may change if the application's IP signature changes.

To prevent issues with common network applications and computer functions, KVH does not recommend use of the BLOCK setting within the Background Data Management categories.
