LAN Wi-Fi Settings

By default, the BDU’s built-in wireless access point (WAP) is turned on. To turn the WAP on or off, or to change its settings, go to the LAN Settings page of the system's web interface or KVH Manager then select Edit under the LAN Wi-Fi settings.

When you set the built-in Wi-Fi Access Point to On, vessel devices will be able to connect to the BDU and the Internet via its built-in WAP. You can also set the following:

Item Description
SSID Enter a unique name for this Wi-Fi network. (Default SSID = KVHVSAT-<last 3 digits of the BDU serial number>)
Security Mode Fixed at "WPA-PSK"; Wi-Fi network must always be secure from outside intrusion.
Band Select either 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz. 5 GHz generally offers faster speeds but less coverage area.
Channel Keep the default setting, or select any other channel for wireless communications.
Password Enter a password for Wi-Fi access. It must be at least 8 characters in length. (Default password = <full 9-digit BDU serial number>)

When you are done making changes, select Save.

IMPORTANT! The range of the BDU’s built-in Wi-Fi will depend on the layout and structure of the vessel. For example, wireless signals cannot pass through bulkheads and can be uneven near metal masses. If the BDU is installed on a steel vessel, you might need a special WAP and the services of a technician with advanced networking expertise.
