Adding Phone Lines

The BDU supports two VoIP phone lines, one for each “Phone” jack (an additional monthly fee applies to the optional second line). As a result, the system can support two simultaneous voice calls. The BDU supports a single VoIP phone line connected to its "Phone Line" jack. However, KVH offers the following optional accessories that add phone lines to support more simultaneous calls:

  • MTA (multimedia terminal adapter) (KVH part no. 19-0504) – Enables up to two additional lines.
  • Crew Calling Gateway (KVH part no. 72-0349) – Provides a dedicated phone line for crew members and charter guests to place ship-to-shore calls using prepaid calling cards.

Note: As an alternative to the Crew Calling Gateway, one of the BDU’s built-in phone lines can be configured for crew calling functionality. Contact KVH Network Services at networkservices@kvh.com for details.

IMPORTANT! The BDU must be set up for a port configuration that supports external VoIP (see Port Configurations). You also need to add the additional line(s) to your airtime subscription.

Note: Only voice calls carried on phone lines 1 and 2phone line 1 are prioritized over general data traffic.
