Application Reporting

The Application Reporting page of KVH Manager categorizes your vessel’s VSAT usage by type of application. This information is provided for both the current month and the previous month of usage, and for both the High-speed channel and the Unlimited Use channel. You can also export the data to a CSV file.

Usage is sorted by the following application types:

Email

Service-provider and webmail email services

Examples: SMTP, POP3, webmail, Gmail, Outlook

Gaming

Video games played on a computer or a dedicated game console

Examples: PC games, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo

Miscellaneous

All other data traffic not covered by another category

Examples: DNS, UDP, NTP, ICMP, remote desktop access

Peer-to-peer

Sharing of files via a P2P distributed application

Examples: BitTorrent, eDonkey, Gnutella, Bitcoin, KuGoo, MQTT

Real-time Communication (RTC)

Live chat, voice, or video communication applications

Examples: WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger, FaceTime, Snapchat, LINE, Kik

Real-time Entertainment

On-demand streaming services (music, videos, sports, etc.)

Examples: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, DIRECTV Now, Apple Music, Sling, YouTube, Pandora, Spotify

Social Networking

Social networking applications

Examples: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tumblr

Tunneling

Applications tunneled in other protocols or encrypted traffic

Examples: VPN, SSH, GRE, L2TP, IPsec, Teredo

Web Browsing

Websites and web protocols

Examples: HTTP, Google, Baidu, Yahoo, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari

Background Data Management

The following categories include data that is routinely transferred by applications running in the background without user intervention.

Bulk Transfer

Transfer of large amounts of data from one device to another or to multiple devices, cloud storage services

Examples: FTP, software updates (OS/app), anti-virus patches, newsgroups

Network Storage

File uploads/downloads using a cloud storage service

Examples: Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud, Dropbox, Box, Google Drive
