Using the KVH Crew Internet Service

If your fleet's management has enabled the KVH Crew Internet Service on your vessel's terminal, you might see the KVH Crew Internet Gateway web page when you try to access the Internet. The Crew Internet Service grants each crew member a certain maximum amount of Internet data usage per day, week, or month over each configured WAN connection (e.g., VSAT, cell, shore Wi-Fi, alternate, or backup). Internet data can also be provided to crew members and guests with a voucher.

Note: See Crew Internet Setup for details on enabling and configuring the Crew Internet service.

Note: If you are a designated Onboard Manager, you can create vouchers at the Crew Internet Gateway. See Creating Vouchers Onboard for details.

Logging Into the Crew Internet Gateway

To connect to the Internet, you first need to log into the Crew Internet Gateway.

  1. The KVH Crew Internet Gateway should appear automatically in your browser when you try to connect to the Internet. You can access it directly by entering https://kvhonline.com in your browser.
  2. If the KVH Crew Internet Gateway indicates that Internet service is available, select Next to proceed.
  3. Enter your username and password or PIN. Then select Sign In
  4. If you entered a temporary password, you will be asked to set a new permanent password. The password must have at least 8 characters and no spaces.

Resetting Your Password

If you forget your password, ask your ship's master to reset it. Your fleet's management can log into KVH Manager and generate a temporary password for you. When you log in with this temporary password, you will be asked to set a new password. Do not duplicate any previous passwords.

Starting an Internet Session

You can start your Internet session at the Internet Access page of the Crew Internet Gateway, provided you have not yet reached your usage limit for the current period. The Internet Access page displays how much data you have remaining, or "Unlimited" if you have unlimited access to the Internet. It also shows how many minutes you have remaining for the day (if applicable).

  1. Using the slider, set the desired duration for your Internet session (between 1-120 minutes).
  2. Select Start Internet Session.
  3. Open a new browser tab or window to visit the website of your choice. Do not close the Crew Internet Gateway tab/window.

Note: If you have voucher data available, it will automatically kick in whenever you have exhausted your standard allocation.

Ending an Internet Session

Your Internet session will end automatically when your selected duration expires or when you reach your usage limit, whichever comes first. However, you can save data usage by ending the session earlier when you are done using the Internet. Return to the Crew Internet Gateway at https://kvhonline.com and select Stop Internet Session.

Your Internet session will also end automatically if your vessel's terminal switches to a different WAN connection. You can then start a new Internet session, assuming an allocation profile or voucher has been assigned to you that permits data usage over that WAN connection.

Logging Out

When you are done using the Crew Internet service, log out of the Crew Internet Gateway by selecting Sign Out from the menu.

Account Summary

The Account Summary page of the Crew Internet Gateway shows your data allowance and current usage for each WAN connection, as well as the daily time limit (if applicable) and voucher data availability (if applicable). The allocation profile that currently applies based on the terminal's active WAN connection is highlighted in blue.

Usage Log

The Usage Log of the Crew Internet Gateway is a historical record of your past Crew Internet sessions. The following information is provided for each session:

  • Start time
  • Stop time
  • WAN connection
  • Data used
  • Duration (in HH:MM:SS)
